The Workshop Location
We’ll all be staying in the beautiful Florence House on the Sussex coast for the duration of the workshop. The price of the workshop includes all accommodation in your own bedroom (bathrooms are shared but plentiful!), all meals (which are delicious) and drinks (yes including bubbly & wine!) The house stands in 6 acres of beautiful grounds and is less than 5 minute walk from the beach and the Sussex downs. The perfect venue for a photographers’ retreat!
Florence House is located in Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 4JS. It’s only 50 miles from the M25 and less than an hour from Gatwick Airport via train.

Who is the workshop for?
The workshop is aimed at family & child lifestyle photographers who want to take their business to the next level. If you’re a hobbyist who is mainly looking to take photographs of styled shoots for your portfolio then there are other workshops out there that are more suited to you.
It’s aimed at photographers who are serious about creating a profitable business that delights their clients and themselves. Much of the workshop will be spent on finding your style, branding, marketing, pricing & sales (leaving time for shooting and relaxing too!) so it’s important that you are committed to making your business more successful.

The retreat will run from Wednesday 18th September to Friday 20th September 2019. Here are the rough timings for the 3 days:
Wed 18 Sept: 1.30pm-9.30pm (dinner included)
Thurs 19 Sept: 8.00am-9.30pm (breakfast, lunch & dinner included)
Fri 20 Sept: 8.00am-1.00pm (breakfast & lunch included)
We will spend the whole 3 days at the wonderful Florence House, so no cars are required once we are there.

The price of the 3 day retreat is £1100 and includes the following:
- 3 days of intensive training over a 48 hour period
- 2 nights accommodation in your own bedroom at Florence House
- A 170 page beautiful workbook (described by previous attendees as their new business bible!)

- A shiny new headshot taken by Vicki (delivered to you after the workshop)
- Access to a video after the retreat showing Vicki editing a number of images from start to finish

I want to keep the group small to ensure that you all get the individual attention you need, so there will be a maximum of 10 people attending. (I need a minimum of 8 people for the workshop to go ahead).
I believe it’s different for a few different reasons.
Firstly this workshop is designed for photographers who want to create a profitable business. The focus of the workshop is providing you with the strategies and advice you need to make your business a success. Obviously shooting is a key part of this, but it’s not necessarily the most important part. So we will spend around 75% of the time working on your business and around 25% on shooting, whereas with many photography workshops it’s the other way round.
I have been planning this retreat for years because I knew I didn’t want to do something that just lasted just a day. I know that the training courses I’ve got the most out of in the past, are ones where we immerse ourselves for a few days. Then you leave feeling reinvigorated and motivated.
We will have our own personal chef for the 3 days (hooray!), walks on the cliffs, lovely wine in the evenings, optional yoga class and beauty treatments. All of the things that make this a retreat not just a workshop.
And lastly, I really care about your business succeeding. I won’t hold anything back. I only run this retreat once a year, and I will be there as your mentor cheering you on along the way. (And at least you can be confident that the advice you are receiving is from someone who is currently running a successful photography business, not someone who is only training fellow professionals because they can’t get make their photography business work. 😉 )
If you have been working on building your portfolio and are in the process of building your business then the workshop will be great for you to establish your style and brand right from the start.
If you’re an aspiring photographer just thinking about starting a business then the workshop isn’t right for you as we will be spending a lot of time talking through fairly advanced business and marketing strategies.
That depends. If you are totally satisfied with where your business is right now, you’re getting the amount of clients you want and are happy with the orders you receive then you probably don’t need to attend the workshop.
However if you have been in business for years and you’re still not making the money you want from it or attracting the right kind of clients then the workshop could be just what you need. Many of the past attendees had been in business for nearly a decade and got tons of value out of it.
Sometimes when you are so close to your work and your business, it’s a challenge to see what needs to change. And if you just carry on doing the same things, you’ll only get the same results. So often what is necessary is for someone to help you take a step back and look at your business and work objectively, and advise you what you need to do to get the results you want.
Yes you will be able to take images of the shoots, and you will be able to use these in your own portfolios (as long as you provide the family with the images you are to use). The session won’t be a styled shoot, it will be a normal family with an emphasis on capturing authentic emotions and relationships. See my own galleries to get an idea of the kind of shoots to expect.
You’ll be able to watch me shoot and my aim is to arm you with ideas and inspiration that you can use in your own work, rather than just portfolio images that lots of other photographers have as well.
If you main motivation for attending a workshop is to get portfolio images then this probably isn’t the best workshop for you.
I won’t be covering how to shoot with articificial light as I shoot with natural light 99.9% of the time. I won’t cover Photoshop as I use Lightroom the majority of the time. And I won’t be giving advice about in-person sales as I use online galleries with great results.
This retreat has been in the planning for some years now after receiving lots of requests from photographers. I have been doing 1-2-1 training with photographers for a few years now ( you can see their reviews here) but April 2016 was the first time I had run this Delight retreat.
I wanted to find the perfect venue and offer something different to the other workshops that are out there.
Also I just didn’t have the time to run a workshop before my boys were both at school. My schedule is always so busy with shoots (which is a good thing!) so I have recently hired an associate photographer to take on some of my sessions, therefore freeing up time for me to work on this retreat.
I do understand. It’s always difficult to take the leap to investing in training especially when you aren’t making much of a profit. But if you carry on with what you are doing you are only going to get the same results. So you need to invest in training to learn how to change things and start getting the results you want.
Most photography training courses are around £300-£400 for the day for around 6 hours of training. With the Delight retreat you are getting 3 days worth of training packed intensively into 48 hours. So the training alone is worth the £1100 price. Then when you bear in mind that you also get a 170 page workbook, 2 nights accommodation, a brand new headshot and all of your food and drink included as well, it represents fantastic value.
And no need to do 3 separate workshops on shooting, business & marketing!
When I have invested in training in the past, I have always looked at it that I only need to get one new client in order for it to pay for itself. Or you could look at it this way, you only need to get less than £200 extra from your next 5 clients and you will have made your money back. I’m confident if you take action on the advice you learn in the workshop that you will be able to do this.
The 1-2-1 sessions take place at times during the retreat that won’t affect the group teaching, mainly in the evenings.
I’ve been on a workshop before where everyone had to sit around waiting while the trainer was doing the 1-2-1’s which is frustrating. Not on this retreat! I make sure they take place when you are having some down-time or getting to know each other over drinks in the evening.
As with all online transactions, there is a 14 day ‘cooling off’ period, so if you change your mind within this time then your deposit will be refunded in full.
After this time the deposit is non-refundable, but you are welcome to find someone to fill your place. If you change your mind more than 3 months before the start of the workshop then I will help you with marketing the place and will refund your deposit if it is re-sold. Please note that if the place isn’t filled then your deposit won’t be refunded.
As a general rule, I’m afraid I can’t take any photographers on the retreat who are based within 30 miles of my home in Hindhead, GU26 (including the whole of Surrey).
I share a ton of advice and proven strategies during the workshop and it wouldn’t be wise for me to provide this to a photographer covering the same area, I hope you understand!
However I have taken a few Surrey photographers on the retreat in previous years. If you think you have a very different style to me and we target very different audiences then it may well be a yes! Please get in touch so we can chat about it. Thank you.
